The Hope Builders Organization Negros Island Inc. (HBONI), through its TUGDO Project, joined the 3-day training on Good Agricultural Practices Backyard Farming participated by more than 40 members of the Ata Tribe community at Barangay Puey, Sagay City, Negros Occidental from April 28 to 30, 2026. The initiative aimed to equip Ata families with practical agricultural knowledge that supports food security, self-reliance, and long-term community resilience.

Facilitated by TÙGDÓ Project head Leonel Flores, the training was made possible through the collaborative partnership of the Association of Negros Producers, Inc. (ANP), the Local Government Unit of Sagay City, the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, and the 79th Infantry Battalion. This unified effort highlighted the shared commitment of government agencies, civil society, and community leaders to uplift indigenous peoples through sustainable development and agricultural empowerment.

The Ata tribe, recognized as among the earliest indigenous inhabitants of Negros Island, have long maintained a deep connection with nature through hunting, gathering, and traditional ecological practices. Historically living as nomadic forest dwellers, many Ata families have faced growing challenges which have increased the urgency for sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Through backyard farming, participants were introduced to practical methods that can help improve crop production. This initiative not only addresses immediate food sustainability needs but also offers long-term opportunities for economic stability while honoring the Ata community’s cultural identity and heritage.

HBONI’s TUGDO Project continues to stand as a beacon of hope for vulnerable and marginalized sectors across Negros Island. By working hand in hand with the Ata Tribe, HBONI reinforces its mission of building empowered communities where tradition, dignity, and sustainable progress flourish together. Through partnerships and grassroots action, this initiative serves as a meaningful step toward a more inclusive and food-secure future for indigenous peoples.
